The original
Hopperstad Stavkirche was built in 1130 AD in Vik, Norway. This
replica was constructed on the site of the Heritage Hjemkomst
Interpretive Center in Downtown Moorhead, home to a replica Viking
ship as well. It was made possible by contributions of money
and services by many persons and firms, including ours. The
Viking builders developed refined construction techniques using
wood columns and planks (staves) along with ornate carvings to
fashion inspiring places of worship for converts to the newly
introduced Christian religion. In addition to its role as an
interpretive exhibit, and its symbolic role as a reminder of the
Scandinavian roots of the region, this small replica building
serves as a chapel for weddings, and other special events in the
summer months. |
